Students, Schools, and Social Gatherings

A letter from Miami County Public Health

November 13, 2020

In response to the recent surge in positive COVID-19 cases in Miami County, there have been questions as to the spread as it relates to students and our schools. From the disease investigation conducted on these cases, the majority of cases are occurring from community spread. The schools have done a great job in helping control the spread of COVID-19 in the schools.

Miami County Public Health (MPCH) is finding that students and staff who are testing positive have contracted COVID-19 from social gatherings occurring outside of the school

MCPH is receiving reports that students who are supposed to be quarantined at home are still attending social gatherings such as bonfires, Halloween parties, birthdays, private dances, and other gatherings/events. If you are considering hosting or attending an event like this, please think twice. These types of events are creating opportunities to spread COVID-19 which impacts our schools and student’s ability to remain in class.

If you have tested positive for COVID-19 and isolating or a close contact and quarantining, do not attend social events or gatherings.

As a reminder:

Those who have tested positive for COVID-19 need to:

  • isolate at home until they are fever free for at least 24 hours (without medication)
  • AND showing signs of improvement of symptoms
  • AND at least 10 days since symptoms first appeared.

For those who test positive for COVID-19 but do not develop symptoms should isolate for 10 days from the date of their first positive COVID-19 test.

Those who are classified as a close contact should quarantine at home for the full 14 days.
