Building Maintenance

This program is designed to introduce a broad spectrum of trades to the students of the surrounding area. Topics range from basic safety and introduction to construction tools to deeper dives into trades like plumbing, carpentry, electrical, drywall, painting, flooring, HVAC, roofing, tilework, concrete and more.

The Building Maintenance program was formed when area industry leaders and employers indicated that there was a need for students to have a general knowledge of a variety of skill trades.

What We Do in Building Maintenance

Skills for the Future

  • Knowledge of public and private plumbing systems, installation and repairs

  • Plumbing fixture installation, maintenance and repairs

  • Knowledge of safety practices and workplace procedures

  • Operation of hand and power tools used in construction and maintenance

  • Carpentry including both rough-in and finished work

  • Understanding of electrical systems and safe wiring practices

  • Residential wiring for light fixtures, outlets and appliances

  • Drywall installation, finishing and repair

  • Painting techniques

  • Flooring installation including materials like tile, wood and vinyl

  • Knowledge of HVAC systems, their function and minor troubleshooting

  • HVAC ductwork installation

  • Residential mechanicals and appliance troubleshooting and minor repairs

  • Blueprint reading and understanding

  • Roofing skills for residential construction and repair

  • Tilework for walls, floors and decorative applications

  • Knowledge of concrete work, including pouring and finishing

  • Understanding how to build from the ground up

  • Problem-solving and critical thinking in troubleshooting issues and repairs

  • Personal home projects or professional career path knowledge

Program Overview

  • Gain practical experience and knowledge of the construction industry.

  • Understand and practice proper building techniques and sequences, floor framing, wall framing, roof framing, and finishing.

  • Learn the importance of solid foundations and footings.

  • Operate construction equipment including skid steer, mini excavator, backhoe, and bulldozer.

  • Complete construction projects from start to finish, including mini barns.

  • Participate in service projects both on and off campus.

Design

  • Design and build smaller scale models of real world construction projects such as house framing walls and bathrooms

Students who qualify have the opportunity to participate in one of three options for career development during their senior year. All three programs allow students to work within their career field while attending school on a modified schedule, so you they gain skills, experience and competitive wages.
